We Resist in our Music: The Story of Lovers Rock and Palestine Underground
7 Oct 2021 6pm
A special double-bill film & food event by Leeds Palestinian Film Festival in partnership with Leeds Black Film Club.
The Story of Lovers Rock
(dir. Menelik Shabazz, 2011, 97mins)
We pay tribute to Menelik Shabazz, a pioneer in the development of Black British cinema and in the forefront of British film-making for over 30 years. Menelik died prematurely in June 2021. One of his most important films, this is the story of a uniquely British genre of reggae, a narrative of warmth, love and identity, born from the harsh black experience of the 1970’s and 80’s.
(dir. Jessica Kelly, 2018, 27mins)
Hip-Hop musicians defy the walls, rules and check-points separating Palestinians in Israel from those in the occupied West Bank. Making their music across boundaries is more than dance and party – it is "therapy for the identity crisis" and "a re-birthing of the Palestinian community".
The films will be followed by a discussion panel. Tickets are available online.
During this period of social distancing and lockdown due to Coronavirus we advise that you check directly with the organiser of this event that it is going ahead as publicised.
Ticket Price : £6.00 - £8.00
- Adults only
