The Warp and Weft of Alice Cliff Scatcherd
4 Oct 2016 - 21 Oct 2016
Writer and performer Becky Cherriman is writing a one woman show inspired by Morley social reformer and philanthropist Alice Cliff Scatcherd (1842-1906) and would like your input.
Alice Cliff Scatcherd shocked late 19th Century conservative society by travelling Europe with her husband without a wedding ring. She set up a school for working women and campaigned for women’s suffrage – still finding time for a keen interest in fashion.
Becky asks: what do we make of the historical figure of Alice Cliff Scatcherd and how does she speak to the concept of the have-it-all, be-it-all modern woman?
The Warp and Weft of Alice Scatcherd
This drop-in session will present a rare opportunity to view the Alice Cliff Scatcherd scrapbook, discover more about Morley’s heritage and see Allana Marsh's initial costume designs that have been influenced by Alice’s interest in Victorian fashion. Find threads that link you to this fascinating historical figure and contribute to the discussion.
Please bring photographs or anecdotes that relate to the Scatcherds or Morley between 1842 and 1906 or simply your curiosity and life experience.
Having It All, Being It All
A creative writing workshop that explores modern women at work and play. Taking inspiration from the life, character and interests of Alice Scatcherd, we will write about real and fictional modern women - their passions, fashions, campaigns and complexities.
These workshops and other research with Morley Archives will be followed up by a writing residency on the ground floor of Morley Library (Mon 17th-Fri 21st October, 10-3). Have your say on the work-in-progress and contribute your own ideas each day between 1 and 2 pm.
Please check times with event organiser for any last minute changes.
Donations towards project costs are accepted on a pay-as-you-feel basis.
