Summer's Cool: Hip Hop Workshops
3 Aug 2020 - 24 Aug 2020
Let kids unleash their creativity at this four-week course about hip hop culture, where they'll try MCing, DJing, breaking and graffiti.
These FREE sessions with Hello HipHop and graffiti artist Hyro Graff give kids the opportunity write, rap, dance and draw their way through the summer holidays.
Fun weekly workshops will teach them all about the aspects of hip hop culture, encouraging them to get creative and be themselves. Over the four-week course, they'll get to grips with loads of fun new skills and build on them each week to boost their confidence. Kids also get a free lunch before or after each session, depending on which one you book.
We're running family-friendly hip hop drop ins each Sunday that feed into these classes – find out more here.
Please note that booking is essential. Parents must stay on site during the event.
Session 1 (Monday 3 August): Rhyme and Rhythm
Budding MCs will learn the building blocks for beatboxing and rap, putting words together to eventually create a rap that's personal to them.
In the Rhythm session, they'll start to get a feel for the music, exploring movement and dancing to the beat.
Session 2 (Monday 10 August): DJ and Dance
This week, kids learn about the DJ's basic setup, like the turntables and the mixer. They'll get an introduction to vinyl, have a go at dropping the needle and scratching records, and learn about 'turntablism' – using the turntables as an instrument.
Building on the rhythm session from week one, kids will start to explore different levels, from dancing on their feet to getting down on the floor! They'll have the opportunity to add their own flavour and come up with a routine.
Session 3 (Monday 17 August): Raps and Graffiti
This time, mini rappers will practice writing raps about different themes and start to collaborate with each other.
They’ll also find out more about famous graffiti artists, pick out styles and colours they like, then piece together a style of their own.
Session 4 (Monday 24 August): Graffiti and Fashion
Week three graffiti skills come into practice as workshoppers dream up their own font and use their work to customise things like clothing. They’ll discover the history of hip hop fashion, then design a cool character and an outfit for them to wear.
When you look good, you feel good! Kids will talk abut how they might rock what they or their character are wearing to show it off while they're dancing.
We've split the day into two age groups – make sure you select the right one when you book:
Morning sessions, 10.30am-1pm (lunch from 12-1pm): ages 7-11
Afternoon sessions, 12-3pm (lunch from 12-1pm): ages 12-16
Places are very limited to comply with social distancing rules, so please book fast! All equipment will be carefully cleaned before and after each session. Hand sanitiser will be available during the session. Parents to stay in the building.
All money raised through this event will support the development of Left Bank Leeds Charitable Trust, (charity no. 1146734).
Please note, we take photos at our events for marketing purposes. If you would prefer not to appear in these, please let a member of staff know when you arrive so they can inform the photographer.
