Stephanie Weston - 'Be Careful With That, Love'
19 Jun 2019 - 20 Jun 2019
“Be careful with that, love” is something Womxn are often told when picking up tools and other items that are traditionally viewed as ‘male’. The project began after being told that very phrase, and fed off the cynical marketing ploys that reinforce gender norms rather than dissolving them. The constant marketing of pink items for women increases the price by around 7% for the ‘pleasure’ of a pink version of the same product. An initial idea of photographing women with power tools quickly morphed into an exploration of gender norms. The brash set of both still and moving images were created to facetiously challenge the patriarchy’s ingrained, continuous misogynistic views of what Womxn can and cannot do.
