Skybluepink - new play by Ray Brown
8 Mar 2020 7:30pm
When Mal Johnson calls on Anne Levington-South (‘sounds like motorway service station, darling’) they begin a life-changing journey uncovering shocking truths, happy memories, pain, and increasing intoxication.
Mal is a skilled engineer who has lost everything; wife, job, house, self respect. Thrown on the scrap heap, caught in a pyramid sales scam, broke and desperate, he delivers and demonstrates luxury items to those who can afford to buy them.
Anne Levington-South, nee White, is a very rich widow, lonely in a meaningless world of electronic guard dog, imaginary mother, and, her only friend, Vlado the vodka bottle.
Annie and Mal were childhood sweethearts in a South Yorkshire mining village. Annie’s father moved to Sheffield and she went to grammar school, London University, and 1970s promiscuity. Mal avoided the pit in favour of an engineering apprenticeship. He married, had one child, then his wife ran off with Annie’s grammar school boyfriend… but that is only one very small part of a cruel matrix that has held them unknowingly tight over the years.
A laughter and tears play, SKYBLUEPINK shines a light on two lives and illuminates late 20th century Britain. Ray Brown (pictured) is known to Headingley Litfest for THE YERNEY PROJECT and assorted readings and Radio 4 broadcasts.
