Sculpting in Stone
25 Jul 2021 10am - 4pm
As part of our summer exhibition Material Matters workshop programme, learn the techniques and process of stone carving in a two day weekend workshop.
You will be using the type of material and tools that every stone carver has used, from Antiquity to Michelangelo, Bernini to Rodin!
Learn how to start “thinking” in three dimensions and discover how to plan and create a sculpture of your own in limestone.
The course will take place outside, with cover in case of rain.
Attendees will need to bring:
Warm clothing that can become dirty/dusty.
Proper shoes/boots, if possible steel toe capped, but not essential. Need to be comfortable as you will be standing to work.
Work gloves (optional)
Hat or scarf to keep dust out of hair (optional)
Some form of inspiration, idea or target to achieve. Either a picture of a sculpture for reference, or a picture or object from nature, whatever you like!
Sketchbook and pencils.
Sunny Bank Mills will provide:
Water/tea/coffee and homemade cake
Dust mask and safety goggles.
About your tutor:
Dominic Hopkinson MRSS (Member of the Royal Society of Sculptors) with over 30 years experience as a sculptor, artist and educator.
About Material Matters
On display in the gallery 12th June – 1st August 2021
Traditionally, stone, metal, clay, and wood were carved, moulded, and cast to make sculpture. Material Matters explores how artists working today use, adapt or manipulate these traditional materials or processes to make contemporary sculptural work.
Supported with funding from Arts Council England
