Thackray Medical Museum

Beckett Street, Leeds, LS9 7LN

For centuries, women were thought of as being at the mercy of their biology. From the ancient Greek notion of the “wandering womb” to more recent attention to PMT and the menopause, women’s health has been used to explain and justify cultural attitudes to women. Find out about the fascinating history of women’s health, alongside modern initiatives in women’s health nursing.

Speaker Professor Ellen Annandale, PhD, FAcSS from the Department of Sociology, University of York explores the title ‘Women and decisions in childbirth: plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose’ focusing on how women's capacity to be involved and make decisions has been approached historically.

Our second speaker, Julia Hogan, CaSH Nurse Specialist and Contraception Lead Nurse for Marie Stopes UK will talk about current UK abortion provision and the move towards medical abortion. She will also look at the current range of contraception methods and the development of nurse led delivery of contraception.

Free same-day admission to the Thackray Museum with an event ticket. Just show your Eventbrite ticket (printed or on your phone) at the admission desk.
