Part of 2021 Leeds Opera Festival (23-30 August)

A double-bill of short operas by Gustav Holst.

Directed by Emma Black, conducted by Lewis Gaston, designed by George Johnson-Leigh

At the Boar’s Head is a one-act comic opera adapted from Shakespeare’s Henry IV plays, featuring Sir John Falstaff and Prince Hal. It is largely based on traditional English melodies, and is a tuneful and terrifically boisterous entertainment. In stark contract Savitri is a chilling and powerful opera based on a story from the epic Indian Mahābhārata. Concerning the fate of Savitri and her husband, Satyavan, the piece demonstrates the raw emotional power of opera and the human voice.

Together these works make a terrifically varied double-bill that showcase opera’s ability to be dramatic and comedic; to be expansive and intimate; to deal with the otherworldly and the everyday.
