Samra Mayanja: scripted for a wayward narrator
9 Dec 2019 - 19 Dec 2019
Samra Mayanja studied for her Foundation Diploma at Leeds Arts University and has since exhibited and spoken widely. Her recent research explores the Ugandan film industry.
The exhibition follows the process that an actress embarks on in order to understand and play the role of a women, named in the script as THE WOMAN WHOSE NAME WAS OMITTED FROM THE SCRIPT.
Borrowing from Saidiya Hartman’s process of 'critical fabulation' (2008), 'scripted for a wayward narrator' constructs fictional narratives about two members of the artist's family and their roads to death and exile, drawing from online archival material. The exhibition investigates hyper-visible and invisible instances of structural violence.
As this show progresses, its envisaged that audiences will contribute. If you feel inspired by the exhibition, workshop or performance, you are welcome to join the process.
This is a space for contemplation. Please join the artist inside for conversations, workshops and performances. These events are free but booking is required. Please visit the exhibition page for more information.
During this period of social distancing and lockdown due to Coronavirus we advise that you check directly with the organiser of this event that it is going ahead as publicised.
This exhibition is open 10am-4pm Monday to Saturday the Blenheim Walk Gallery. Workshops are free to attend but need to be booked in advance.
