RE:SOUL Sessions : SNG/Secret Night Gang + Mali Hayes & Nii
12 Jun 2021 5pm - 11pm
Manchester is buzzing right now with great contemporary soul music - deep soul, neo-soul, hip-hop soul - with acts like Children Of Zeus, IAMDBB, Mali Hayes, KSR, LayFullStop, Roots Raddix, Lovescene and Jermaine Peterson.
There's a new crew of soul rebels bringing the different generations together who broke out from the city in 2020. Welcome to SNG (Secret Night Gang). They released their debut single "Wanna be with you" back in May 2020 and got good responses from all the right soul/jazz DJs including support from dons like Gilles Peterson and Craig Charles on BBC 6 Music. In August 2020, single number two came out, an epic seven minute plus downtempo deep soul groove called "The Sun" that could sit easily alongside the early-mid 70s soul/jazz-funk sounds of Roy Ayers, Gil Scott Heron, Kool & The Gang and Rotary Connection. Gilles Peterson played it 2 weeks on the trot on his BBC 6 Music weekly show, Jazz FM had it featured across several shows as did Worldwide FM, Totally Wired Radio and dozens of other soul/jazz radio stations and DJs in the UK and abroad. A real underground soul music hit of late summer 2020.
They then appeared at Gilles Peterson's We Out Here Virtual Festival 2020 and promptly signed to his label Brownswood Recordings. "The Sun" was re-released by the label at the end of April 2021 followed by a second single "Journey" at the end of May. Their debut album possibly dropping in late 2021 or early 2022. Before then, they make their Leeds debut at RE:SOUL Sessions at the Brudenell for DJ Lubi.
SNG (Secret Night Gang) are : Kemani Anderson (lead vocals) - Callum Connell (keys, sax) - Stuart Whitehead (bass) - Myke Wilson (drums) - Jack Duckham (guitar) - Al Scott or Matt Wilde (keyboards)
The support artist is one of the UK's finest young soul singers. So happy to announce singer Mali Hayes will be doing the support. She's a Brownswood Future Bubblers alumni, has been releasing music since 2016, has collaborated/worked with great soul artists including SNG, she's also from Manchester and used to come to the RE:SOUL jam sessions in 2015/16 when she was a student at the music college. She's doing a duo set with her guitarist and also a great solo artist/singer himself, Nii. Be there 8pm for their set and to hear some really deep soulful music.
Before and between sets, DJ Lubi will be playing the deep soulful sounds past, present and future that represent RE:SOUL.
