The River Aire: source of power and life, trading artery, filthy drain, neglected backwater, value enhancer, environmental asset and risk

The River Aire and the Leeds & Liverpool Canal made Leeds an inland port. After bustling with life for many centuries, the waterways became commercially and environmentally dead. Now they’re being valued in different ways. You'll see how the old wharves and warehouses have been turned into apartments, offices and leisure destinations, how access to and across the river has improved, how waterfront properties have been protected. What more could be done to make even more of this liquid asset? Will we see an otter, perhaps, on this early evening walking tour?
