Commencing in 1865, and for 100 years thereafter, there were two ways to travel by train from Leeds to Ilkley. One way, the former Midland route through Guiseley and Menston is familiar to us today, but it was also possible to travel by the old NER route from Arthington on the Leeds-Harrogate line through Pool and Otley to join the Midland line at Burley-in-Wharfedale. In his presentation ‘By Rail to Otley’, Mike Dixon traces the origins of the Arthington - Burley link, its working from 1865 -1965, its demolition and its gradual disappearance. Using little known archive photographs, old maps, satellite views and on-the-ground exploration, Mike takes us through a nostalgic story that embraces railway and social history, geography and industrial archaeology.  (image is of Burley in Wharfedale Station)
