Online Event

As part of Leeds Libraries' BBC Novels That Shaped Our World programme we challenge you to get creative with our writing challenges!

To view the BBC’s list of 100 Novels That Shaped Our World and to find out more about the activities below, visit the Leeds Reads website.

Please send all submissions to: leeds.libraries@leeds.gov.uk with the subject 'Novels That Shaped Our World' in PDF or Word format by 3 May 2021.

Choose a book from the BBC Novels list and write your own prologue or an epilogue. Consider what you think should have happened before or after the main plot and how this fits in with the original story. The maximum word is count 2,000.

Choose a book from the list and write a piece about what is happening to a character when they are ‘off screen’ and absent from the main plot of the story. Is what they are doing related to the main plot, or could the character have a separate plot line of their own? The maximum word is count 2,000.

Using a novel from the list, construct a Found Poem on the theme that the novel comes under. You can submit it as a poem, or get creative and present it as a zine! The maximum word count is 500. If you’d like to email your creative zine to leeds.libraries@leeds.gov.uk we will endeavour to publish it online!

Alternatively you can post your zine to Leeds Central Library and we will add it to our physical Zine Library! Address: Zine Library, Leeds Central Library, Calverley Street, Leeds, LS1 3AB.

Visit the Your Dictionary website here for examples of Found poems.

Visit YouTube here to see videos with creative zine ideas.

We challenge you to read as many books as possible from BBC’s list of 100 Novels That Shaped Our World, before 3 May 2021! Send us your reviews! The maximum word is count 2,000.

Share the novel that’s shaped you on social media. Tag @leedslibraries and using the hashtags #MyBookLife and #NovelsThatShapedOurWorld

Look out for lots of other fun ways to get involved by following @leedslibraries on social media, and you are warmly invited to join our monthly book club! Visit the Leeds Reads website for more information about the Leeds Reads Book Club.

Thanks to Libraries Connected, Arts Council England and BBC Arts for funding this programme of activities.
