Nervous translation, the second feature by Shireen Seno, a talented Filipino female director, enables the viewers to look at the world through the eyes of a reserved eight-year-old, Yael (Jana Agoncillo). With her distant mother and an absent father, who is only present in the cassettes Yael repeatedly listens to, as the grown-up examples to observe, the girl has trouble understanding the intricacies of the adult world.
Mesmerizing in its imagery, presented with an intricate sound design and a charming lead performance, Nervous Translation is a slow-paced examination of a child’s world perception, nuancedly connected to the uncertain future in the Philippines in the aftermath of the Yellow Revolution.
