Local historian Brian Hull describes how perhaps almost seven generations ago in the first half of the nineteenth century an ambitious wealthy mine owner took it upon himself to create a fantasy sceptered lake and isle at Parlington Hollins.

Set amidst the lush undergrowth where the Cock Beck passes through the Estate, the plan was to provide a pleasure ground for family, friends and invited guests. In the 1840s a folly was added, built from the remains of the old medieval church of St Mary's Garforth. The site became a well loved nature reserve giving rise to at least two romantic poems. Nowadays long forgotten, its relics slowly decaying and its lake bed a swamp, nature hides this once treasured 'resort'. Brian regularly welcomes visitors to Parlington during Heritage Open Days; this year he takes us on an online adventure.
