Leeds University Great Hall

University of Leeds, Woodhouse Lane, Leeds, LS2 9JT

An early evening walk that tells the story of how the Yorkshire College of Science became a giant of higher education.

Founded “to promote education of both sexes and to provide instruction in such sciences and arts as are applicable or ancillary to the manufacturing, mining, engineering and agricultural industries of Yorkshire”, the College started with 3 professors and 24 students. How did it become a place with more than 38,000 students and 8,000 staff? How has the former residential area been transformed to accommodate today’s vast range of research, teaching and learning?

£10 per person

The Great Hall is listed as having wheelchair access, but this is only the starting point for the tour. Although the campus is much more wheelchair accessible than it used to be, it would help to know in advance if you need this to be taken into account, because the usual route includes steps.
