14 May 2020 - 31 Dec 2020
Discover 300 years of opera history in Leeds with The Leeds Opera Story!
In this episode we explore the first performance in Leeds of an opera by the most celebrated writing partnership of all time - 'Trial by Jury' by William S Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan (1876).
We explore the origins of the opera, uncover the lost theatres of Leeds, and the legacy 'G&S' has had on professional and amateur stages.
This episode has been made in collaboration with Charles Court Opera (charlescourtopera.com) and features an interview with their Artistic Director, John Savournin.
The episode also features new recordings of songs from 'Trial by Jury' performed by Catrine Kirkman and Jack Roberts, and contemporary songs by Jacque Offenbach (performed by Matthew Siviter) and Daniel Auber (performed by Llio Evans).
