Maurice Beresford (1920-2005) was professor of economic history at the University of Leeds. One of his enthusiasms was for understanding how the urban area of Leeds developed. His 1988 book ‘East End, West End’ tells that story: “… a fascinating, massive piece of detailed scholarship … based on a wide range of sources”.
To mark the centenary of his birth (6th Feb 2020) I’ll summarise how Maurice uncovered the story of the expansion of the cloth trading town of Leeds. Saturday is the East End; Sunday the West End.
