Leeds Black History Walk 2020

Dates and times

3 Oct 2020 & 4 Oct 2020

Show Map

Parkinson Building Steps

Leeds University, Woodhouse Lane, Leeds, LS2 9JT

The creation of Heritage Corner's Joe Williams, this walk exposes unseen narratives and recent history in order to provoke both questions and positivity, and to inspire the people of Yorkshire.

The African presence in Yorkshire goes back 2000 years, when African priests, soldiers, merchants and others operated in Roman York. Both Greece and Rome negotiated treaties with the Candaces (Queens) of mighty Nubia, Kush and Ethiopia - which were never conquered. Britain's more recent empirical untruths have left a toxic veil over Africa's amazing history and insurmountable contributions to today's British identity and economy.

Heritage Corner challenges imposed misrepresentation with historical facts and intelligent self-representation.

How is this linked to Leeds and specifically to the University of Leeds' campus? Join us and all will be revealed! This walk seeks to inform and unify, we hope to see people from many backgrounds in our audience.

The walk begins on the steps of the iconic Parkinson Building on Woodhouse Lane. The afternoon walk will take place from 2pm-4pm.

The walk is around the campus of the University of Leeds. Walks are led by Joe Williams but look out for annoucements of Special Guest walks in the future!

We still walk in the rain so we advise attendees to bring an umbrella just in case! If the weather is hot, please remember to bring water and use sunscreen as only parts of the walk are in shade. If the University is open there are toilets available on several parts of campus. Currently, we strongly recommend that you wear a mask to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

We rarely cancel a walk because of weather, however if it is extreme and we have to do so we will offer an alternative date or a full refund. If the event has to be cancelled due to COVID-19 we will offer a rescheduled date.

Booking in advance is essential as numbers are limited. Each walk is strictly limited to 15 attendees so that social distancing is possible.

"That was more black knowledge I have learnt in an hour than I've ever learnt in all my 17 years of British education. I love this and feel empowered to learn more. Thank you!"

Booking is via: gcfoundation.co.uk
