Leeds Beckett University - Heritage Open Days
21 Sep 2019 - 22 Sep 2019
Discover the people behind Leeds Beckett University’s historic campus and origins as a university. From the monks and landowners who developed Beckett Park at the heart of the Headingley community over 400 years, to the civic leaders who established our education provision in Leeds in 1824.
Join us on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September 2019 and learn more about the people who shaped Leeds Beckett University at our special exhibition, compiled from our extensive archive not usually on display to the public. Listen to expert talks from our current academics, treat yourself to a delicious cake in our pop-up tea room and let the children play our giant games, climbing wall and archery on the acre.
Today Leeds Beckett University has over 24,000 students in Leeds and 176,000 alumni worldwide and is located across two campuses in Headingley and the city centre. The history of Headingley campus can be traced back to the Cistercian monks of Kirkstall Abbey in the mid-12thcentury, through to the landowners and Leeds banker William Beckett, before it became the City of Leeds Training College in 1913. The founding of Leeds Mechanics Institute in 1824 was once housed in what is now the Leeds City Museum, which marks the origins of the modern-day Leeds Beckett University.
Throughout our history, it is people who have shaped us and who continue to do so today. From municipal leaders and technical professionals to academics, past students, current researchers and the local community, you can explore how they’ve helped make our university what it is today.
During this period of social distancing and lockdown due to Coronavirus we advise that you check directly with the organiser of this event that it is going ahead as publicised.
