Between 1975 and 1980 Peter Sutcliffe murdered thirteen women and attacked several more. In the aftermath, inquiries into the investigation by West Yorkshire Police exposed serious flaws which resulted in significant changes to police tactics - changes that are still felt today.

Women’s anger at the murders drove feminist protests which still reverberate in the present, and northern authors, artists, and filmmakers have returned to the murders to examine the society in which Sutcliffe operated. Forty years on, memories of the Yorkshire Ripper case are still vivid for those who lived through it.

In this talk, researcher Francesca Roe explores the legacy of the murders in the present – from police procedures to public attitudes, poetry to politics.
