Intro to: Staff Making and Twirling
17 May 2020 11am - 3pm
Yorkshire Circus and Open Source Arts invite you to take the first steps into staff twirling with our Intro to - Staff Making + Twirling. Staff is a large and widely popular discipline within circus skills. It has a long history and is still an active part of many cultures around the world.
During this session, participants will learn the skills to create their own custom sized day/practice staff and have a wide selection of bright, sparkly and UV colours to personalise their new equipment specific to them. Our team will be there to guide everyone through the use of the tools needed to create the staffs in a competent and safe manner. As well as taking away their own brand new staff. Yorkshire Circus instructors Joe and Tor will be on hand to teach all participants a range of beginner and intermediate moves as they start their journey into staff twirling.
The day will be split into two parts:
11:00-13:00 - Staff making and customising.
13:00 - 15:00 - Staff twirling workshop.
This session is primarily for beginners in staff twirling but we welcome people with any levels of experience who want to expand their knowledge and skill set.
ABOUT JOE AND TOR: With over 10 years experience in circus skills and social circus projects, Joe has been with Open Source Arts since 2018 and has taken the lead on all things circus in the space and in the wider community. Joe has been growing his skills in staff twirling and contact staff for around 7 years, evolving into fire and LED performances across the country.
Tor has over ten years experience in spinning fire staff and has performed during the Glastonbury Festival opening ceremony for the last 6 of those years, amongst other festivals and events. Alongside staff he also dabbles in nunchucks and poi, and enjoys hula hoop too!
REMEMBER: Please wear appropriate training + workshop attire while attending our workshop. ie. no loose clothing, long hair tied back, no open toe shoes when in the making part of our session. Bring a small sandwich/snack and drinks bottle, we will have a small break during the session for everyone to refuel. Also, bring your creative mind to help your staff come to life and reflect your personality with its design and colours.
Whilst events are being cancelled because of Corona Virus we strongly advise that you check directly with the organiser to see if the venue is still open.
The downstairs level is accessable by wheelchair. The upper level where the dance studio and cafe are situated is not.
