Instant Expert: The Biggest Questions in Physics
14 Sep 2019 10am - 5pm
Presented by New Scientist magazine.
It’s an extraordinary time to be exploring the fundamental reaches of the universe. We can look back through 14 billion years of cosmic history, recreate conditions last seen shortly after the big bang, photograph black holes and glimpse planets orbiting stars several light years away.
Yet such advances have raised other profound questions. Why is 95 per cent of the cosmos invisible to us? What exactly is this dark matter and dark energy? What happens inside black holes? What are the prospects for life elsewhere in the universe? Could our universe really be one of many that exists in a multiverse?
At this event, six expert speakers will guide you through some of the biggest questions in physics. Learn about the progress we’re making and why it’s such an exciting time to working on both theoretical and experimental physics.
Anyone interested in the big question in physics, whatever your age or background. Whether you're a scientist, a student or simply a fascinated human being, Instant Expert: The Biggest Questions in Physics offers the chance to learn directly from the experts at our one-day masterclass.
Topics covered will include:
- Black holes
- Dark matter
- Dark energy
- Particle astrophysics
- Life on other planets
- The multiverse
- Gravitational waves
- Ruth Gregory – professor of physics at Durham University
- Catherine Walsh – astrochemist at the University of Leeds
- Neil Spooner – professor of particle physics and astrophysics at University of Sheffield
- Richard Bower – professor of physics at Durham University
- Tega Edo - gravitational wave physicist at the University of Sheffield
- Clare Burrage - associate professor in the school of physics and astronomy at University of Nottingham
