Hiding in Plain Sight: Discovering the Lost Cinemas of Leeds
14 Aug 2020 - 30 Sep 2020
With over 80 cinemas once existing in Leeds and now only a handful remaining it begs the question: where have all our cinemas gone? The answer is, they’re all around us – you just need to know where to look.
From small neighbourhood picture houses to gigantic super-cinemas, so many of these incredible buildings remain in our lives today – repurposed into shops, clubs, offices – strangely familiar and hiding in plain sight. And for those that are no longer standing, their legacy lives on through the stories, photos and memories that so many of you have.
So this August, with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Leeds Inspired, the Hyde Park Picture House is proud to launch Hiding in Plain Sight – a new interactive heritage project allowing you to rediscover the lost cinemas of Leeds.
To celebrate this launch we’re holding an accompanying exhibition with local independent bookshop Colours May Vary featuring the brand new illustrations produced for the project, by Leeds-based artist Adam Allsuch Boardman.
These will be on display alongside some of the fascinating research material that lay behind the heritage project.
During this period of social distancing and lockdown due to Coronavirus we advise that you check directly with the organiser of this event that it is going ahead as publicised.
