In Celebration of London 2012 Leeds City Council are working with Shelf Life, to create a series of exciting events to be held in the award winning Leeds Kirkgate Market.

Leeds Kirkgate Market is the largest indoor market in Europe, it features over 400 shops selling everything from fresh fish to Chinese lanterns, and more than 15 different nations are represented within the market, which makes it the ideal venue to hold this celebration of International food.

Over the next 3 months events will focus on the culinary traditions of the Countries coming to Leeds this summer to prepare their teams for the Games:

China, Russia, Australia, Canada and the Netherlands there is also a launch event around the culinary delights of Southern Africa.

In addition, Leeds Kirkgate Market are featuring some key Olympic Facts throughout the site, these include:

• World record for longest long jump (8.91m)
• Height of tallest Olympic diving board (10m)
• World record for high jump (2.45m)
• Height tallest current basketball player (2.29m)
• Size of Olympic trampoline (4.28m x 2.4m)
• World record for highest pole vault (6.5m)
• Height of Olympic BMX ramp (8m)
• World record for triple jump (18.29m)

The facts will be marked out around the market and will form part of the market tour on the day.

How to get involved

We have dedicated a series of dates for visiting School parties, the visit, which is free of charge, will include the following:

• Welcome from International representative, with a little background to their country and specifically the food that is enjoyed there.
• A tour of the market, focussing on international food
• A short cookery demo and food tasting

The programme has been written to compliment ‘Key Fact 1’ of Healthy Eating, “helping pupils to understand that a range of factors determine what is eaten throughout the world. Diets vary between individuals for reasons such as availability, preference, resources, time, culture and religion.”
