Welcome to Scalarama Summer Screenings!
93mins | Rated 15 | USA | Director: Bo Burnham | Programmer: Kelsey Raynor

Based upon the whirlwind that is contemporary adolescence, thirteen-year-old Kayla attempts to make her way through the final week of her thus far dire eighth grade, while simultaneously attempting to tackle the all-too-relevant issue of anxiety and loneliness before she begins high school. Eighth Grade displays the reality of being a teenager in contemporary, suburban society in a manner that is sometimes heart-breaking, but ultimately serves as a reminder that we are not alone, and things do get better.

Content Guidance - Eighth Grade

Regular discussion of mental health and body image issues, a particular focus on anxiety with the display of anxiety attacks.
Mentioning of sexual pressure / display of emotional abuse of a minor in two instances.
References to bullying, but no explicit examples of bullying – other kids actively try to make Kayla feel weird and left out, however, which may make some uncomfortable.
Brief reference to Kayla’s bereaved mother, but in a positive light regarding how proud she would be of Kayla – regardless, the mention of it may upset some.
