Distil Your Own Gin
14 Mar 2020 - 14 Nov 2020
Come and join us at Leeds Gin School and Distillery for a gin experience you’ll never forget!
Upon your arrival, we'll greet you with a Hotham's Gin and Tonic in our Distillery Bar where you'll join a group of other gin lovers looking out over our purpose-built Distilling Room.
Next, you'll head over to our Botanicals Bench, where you’ll smell and taste amazing botanicals, and choose the ones you like best for your own gin. Our distiller will advise you on the quantities required, and you’ll soon have a balanced recipe ready.
Once you've decided upon your recipe and weighed out your botanicals, you'll add these to your still, where a litre of spirit awaits. You'll learn about the distillation process whilst you enjoy a gin-based cocktail. We'll encourage you to taste your gin as it distils and your botanicals release their flavours, and we'll show you how to measure the strength of your gin.
Whilst you enjoy another one of our delicious G&Ts, our distiller will talk to you about the history and characteristics of gin, and you'll learn about five main varieties. You'll hear about the Hotham’s brand - how we came to be, and a little about Lord Hotham himself. You'll also learn how to taste gin, and you’ll have the chance to try our gins, distilled right here in the Distillery - Hotham’s Original Gin and Hotham’s Cardamom Gin.
Finally, you'll cut, bottle, name and label your unique gin before wax dipping the stopper to seal the bottle, and finally stamping it with the Hotham's seal of approval.
Now it's time to wander up to 'The Bar Upstairs' and chat through your experience with your new friends. You'll get VIP exclusivity till 8 pm when before our bar opens to the public. As well as the range of Hotham's spirits, we have some amazing Yorkshire beers, ciders, and alcohol-free drinks too.
Don't forget to take graduation photos before you leave our Gin School!
You can also rest assured that once you've finished enjoying it, you can buy another bottle - just order online and our distiller will recreate your recipe and deliver a new bottle of your gin, straight to your door.

We are committed to making sure that our services are available to everyone.
We are aware that our building has limitations on accessibility, but we are keen to make the experience as accessible as we possibly can, as far as it is practical and reasonable to do so.
We are approaching our accessibility in two stages. Our gin school is very inclusive, however, our building will require significant changes and investment to improve accessibility. We are committed to doing this in 2020.
Our door is on a hill so that means there is a small step into the building and then steps down from our reception area that is serviced by a wheelchair lift.
The door provides a clear width of 840mm
The floor service is firm and covered in floor paint.
Seating is provided by the way of bar stools with backs, and low chairs with backs, should this make you more comfortable. Some customers like to stand up - this is fine too. It's your experience and we want you to enjoy it.
Our stills are quite high at 1.25 metres; however, we can assist you loading the still, and extend the pipe so that your gin is distilled onto a bench at a more comfortable height. We advise customers who wish us to have this ready for them upon arrival to contact us at point of booking so we can welcome you prepared.
Hearing and sight
Our Gin School experience is one for all of your senses to enjoy. We welcome assistance dogs and have a hearing loop to assist those who require it. We also have a written script for you to follow, should you require it. We can also supply drinking water (instead of gin) for assistance dogs too. Our distillery is well lit and additional lighting is available.
We aim to explain things as clearly as possible using simple language that you can understand.
We have unisex toilets which are situated upstairs.
We have plans to have an accessible toilet fitted on the ground level, but this may not be installed by the time we open. Please check with us.
We have hand wash facilities on the ground floor level, with a lever tap. There are accessible toilets at Victoria Gate opposite.
The stairs have handrails to the right-hand side.
The treads have closed risers with colour contrasting nosings. Stairs are hard surfaces. There is a good colour contrast between the stairs and the adjoining wall. Lighting levels are suitable.
Transport/parking options for getting to and from the SchooL
We recommend not driving to the event so that you can fully enjoy sampling our wonderful gins, and you can sample your own gin as you distil it. However, we do have a range of non-alcoholic drinks for drivers. Remember, we can also help you to make a non-alcoholic spirit if you would prefer. Please let us know in advance if you would like this option.
Our building is in the middle of town so there is easy access from the taxi drop off point.
There are Blue Badge/accessible parking bays nearby. There is no onsite parking.
The nearest bus stop is outside served by bus numbers; 49, 50, 50A, 163, 166, 167, 168, X60
Reading and writing
Our Gin School experience does not require you to be able to read and write, with the exception of weighing out your chosen botanicals, where we will be happy to assist.
