Detroit A Go Go
25 Oct 2020 7pm - 11pm
It started with a kiss. And has become the biggest Northern Soul event in the World.
Soul fanatics Phil and Kim Dick exchanged that kiss when they got married, as you do, at the Motown Museum in Detroit.
Phil had been coming to Detroit to look for Rare Soul records for years, and the wedding on the site of Motown’s World famous Hitsville Studio strengthened his love for all things Motor City. “Many of the Detroit Soul acts come over to play in the UK. I wanted to give British Soul fans to see these wonderful artists perform in their home. And so Detroit A-Go-Go was born,” recalled Phil.
They said it couldn’t be done but it happened. The debut Detroit A-Go-Go event took place in 2017 with 300 plus Brits making the trek over the Atlantic, and being joined by Americans initially bemused but then charmed by the UK invasion. It was so successful that two other Go-Go’s took place in 2018 and 2019. Artists from Motown and smaller but revered Detroit record labels including The Supremes, The Miracles, The Elgins. The Velvelettes, Kim Weston. Carolyn Crawford, Lorraine Chandler, Carl Carlton, Pat Lewis, Ronnie McNeir and Tobi Legend have appeared.Even P-Funk superstar George Clinton of Parliament and Funkadelic fame popped along to answer seldom asked questions about his pre Funk career as a 1960’s Detroit record producer and songwriter. He cried on stage when accepting an award,“To be honest I think most of the British Soul fans who have attended the event have shed a tear at some stage, whether it be from seeing their heroes on stage ,visiting the Motown studio,or attending a private part at the former home of Berry Gordy, the owner of Motown. This music connected with many Britsish people in a very special way when they were teenagers and the love affair has continued as they have got older. Detroit A-Go-Go struck a chord and so we thought why not bring the whole thing over to the UK, so more people can enjoy it what is a unique event,” said Phil.
The debut UK Detroit A-Go-Go will take place at Leeds University Union on October 23 to 25. A 10-piece hand picked band of top Detroit Soul musicans will be flying in along with artists including JJ Barnes, Spyder Turner, Jr Walkers All Star Band, Ronnie McNeir, The Elgins, Willie Kendrick, Pat Lewis, Carolyn Crawford, Ronnie Savoy, Chris Clark, Billy Prince and Yvonne Vernee. Response to the line up has been phenomenal with all V.I.P tickers snapped up within days of going on sale. Full event tickets are available at £60.
