Health challenges and responses over 250 years - in the month that marks 150 years since the opening of the Gilbert Scott-designed Leeds General Infirmary - pictured here.

The expanding industries of Leeds gave its population greater economic opportunities … and a greater risk of falling ill or being injured. Most people lived in poor housing and worked long hours in dangerous factories for low wages. Efforts were made to improve care of the sick and to counter some sources of infection and to reform working conditions. But medical science and practice were still limited and progress in management of water supply, sewage and housing was slow.

The tour encompasses the period from the late 18th century to the era of the NHS. You'll see some of the sites where physicians, surgeons and some other medical practitioners studied, lived, worked and made their mark.

Meet in front of main entrance to Quarry House. Best approached from the side where the BBC is located. The walk will take us across the city centre and will finish at the 1860s buildings of LGI.
