‘Imagine, if you can a small room, hexagonal in shape, like the cell of a bee. It is lighted neither by window nor by lamp, yet it is filled with soft radiance. There are no apertures for ventilation, yet the air is fresh. There are no musical instruments, and yet at the moment that my meditation opens, this room is throbbing with melodious sounds. An armchair is in the centre, by it’s side a reading desk-that is all the furniture. And in the armchair there sits a swaddled lump of flesh.’

[The Machine Stops, E.M Forster, 1909]

If you haven’t read ‘The Machine Stops’ by E.M Forster, now’s the time. It’s time to get out, to turn off the Amazon tap, and to remember we are surface dwellers. Start with coming for coffee or a beer and dropping in to see CHRYSALIS - HPAC’s inaugural show at Hyde Park Book Club, come on ... join our art club. Everyone’s invited.

CHRYSALIS, will showcase four brilliant contemporary artists, whose work intersects around this liminal space of change, potential, beginning, exploration and scene setting. It’s been a strange year, one that’s left the familiar behind, one that’s turned our kitchen tables into desktops or war rooms, one that’s made touching a taboo, one that’s left us uniquely altered. A year that has led us here to the gates, and left us to emerge into our new normal.

Keep a spy on @hydeparkartclub for details of linked events and releases of fabulous editions produced by our artists at an affordable price point.
