Carol Sorhaindo - Pillar of Strength
18 Oct 2016 - 19 Feb 2016
Leeds Museums and Galleries offers visual artists and community groups based in Yorkshire the chance to exhibit their work in the Window Frame, a prominent space by the main entrance of Leeds City Museum. From October 18th, Leeds artist Carol Sorhaindo displays her work Pillar of Strength.
Born in England, Carol spent most of her formative childhood years in Dominica, ‘Nature Isle of the Caribbean’, and now lives in Leeds where her practice is based. She has recently completed an MA in Creative Practice at Leeds College of Art.
With Carol’s interest in our natural heritage and mental well-being, it is no surprise that themes of ‘Nature and Ruins’, cycles of life and cultural identity, are key areas of investigation in her recent work. Investigation of heritage sites of cultural significance in both Yorkshire and the Caribbean, reveal bio deterioration, botanical entanglement and plants with dye, and healing qualities. Sites also reveal entangled human narratives, some of trauma and pain in ned of balance and healing. Natural plant and earth pigments combine with delicate hand drawn imagery and print processes to create new textile ranges using natural fabrics such as silk, cotton muslin, canvas and linen.
With an interest in working with people and a belief in the benefits of art engagement, Carol’s focus has turned to more community engaged practice, providing art tuition and creative workshops in schools, community groups, museum, galleries and organisations such as Leeds Mind and Touchstones. Much of her community engaged work had a mental wellbeing focus, and she maintains a strong belief in the therapeutic benefits of the arts as a means of exploring and understanding self and the world around us.
Carol continues to develop her studio practice with a focus on her ‘Botangled’ textile range and site based research which unravels suppressed and entangled botanical narratives, encouraging discourse and reflective public responses.
