Physical and human geography are always connected

So many settlements grew up at a crossing point of a navigable river and Leeds is a typical example. Come and explore the ways that the River Aire has flowed through the history of Leeds and how the waterway has been (mis)managed. What role will the river play in the future of the city?

We’ll walk beside the river, cross bridges when we come to them, learn about the changing economic and water environment and consider the role of geographers in promoting understanding of rivers.

Meet on the steps on the south side of the Town Hall. The walk will start properly when we reach the river and we’ll go downstream as far as the Climate Innovation District. A table will be reserved at a suitable pub near Leeds Bridge for continuing conversation over a pint. Not that local water is undrinkable these days, but old cultural habits die hard.
