Birds of Passage (Pájaros de verano) + introduction with Dr. Rebecca Jarman & Mia Bayes
24 May 2019
Ciro Guerra, director of the Oscar-nominated Embrace of the Serpent, releases his next epic Birds of Passage. Based on a true story, the film is set in South America within the Wayuu community. When Rafayet (José Acosta) sets his heart on Zaida (Natalia Reyes), a daughter of the prominent family within the tribe, he must prove himself worthy of becoming her husband. In this determination he ventures to ignore the community’s moral rules and traditions – soon he succeeds in a new business of drug trafficking. However, by pursuing materialistic goals Ragayet destroys the tribe – uninvited strangers appear, traditions are destroyed, chaos and death follow.
Brimmed with breathtakingly grandiose landscape shots and surreal images, embellished with detail to an extend that asks for several viewings, Birds of Passage is a beautiful drama that allows to cast a glance into a tragic involvement of a family in a drug war.
