Join us on Zoom as we host award-winning Australian author Karen Turner.

Karen’s latest novel ‘Stormbird’ transports the reader back to wartime Britain, a place recalled from many of Karen’s earlier childhood memories.

Set in Yorkshire in 1941, Stormbird tells the story of an unexpected relationship that builds between a British war widow and a German fighter pilot, shot down and in hiding, despite their countries’ bitter differences.

For Karen, creating wartime Britain meant reliving many of the tales told to her by her mother and grandmother. Her mother was born in Yorkshire in 1941, and her grandmother drove an ambulance around Leeds during the bombing raids. In this author talk, hear about Karen’s love of Otley, Yorkshire and Leeds and how they, and the tales told to her by her mother and grandmother, inspired her writing. Learn about how she recreated war-torn Britain and the research she undertook into the period, and see if you can guess which real-life town the fictional town, in Karen’s first two novels, is based on!
