When West Yorkshire Queer Stories sat down with theatre director Jamie Fletcher in September 2019, it was a chance to find out about one of the most groundbreaking productions ever staged at the Leeds Playhouse. 2017’s Dancing Bear exploded what Jamie refers to as “the holy trinity of headf*cks” - gender, sexuality and faith - with a boundary-blurring mixture of music, dance and philosophical drama, featuring Divina De Campo amongst a diverse and talented cast. In this extract, we hear about the origins of the show and the importance of encouraging “honest real stories, told by queer people, to be put on the stage.”
