Unseen Histories: artists wanted

Unseen Histories: artists wanted
Written by Assembly House  26/07/2021

Heritage Corner, pioneers of the Leeds Black History Walk, and Assembly House are pleased to announce four paid commissions for Black artists.

In September 2021 the organisations will share their collaboration on  ‘Unseen Histories’,  a festival of artwork exploring Black British history. Every weekend in September will bring a different public event  and we’re looking for four Black artists to be part of the festival’s finale.

Heritage Corner’s Joe Williams, the festival’s lead artist and historian, reflects,  ‘Unseen Histories is about new expressions and new voices being heard in a society that has not only excluded those voices but also the history that has helped to form the world around us.’

For the final day’s event, Heritage Corner will start by taking audiences on a Black History walk in Holbeck, then onto an open top bus for a curated tour uncovering more Black History in the centre of Leeds. This will culminate in Armley for a showing of the four newly-commissioned artworks.

Each artwork is paired with a museum or gallery. These are; Assembly House, Leeds’ Industrial Museum and the Leeds’ Discovery Centre. Each commission will receive research support from Joe Williams and production support from the teams at Assembly House and Heritage Corner, to help you bring your ideas to life.

The commissions are open to any artform, so whether you’re a painter, poet, dancer, sculptor (or any other type of artist), the Unseen Histories team would love to hear from you. They’re looking for artists at any stage of their career, so don’t worry if you haven’t shown your artwork professionally before.  If you’re just taking your first steps in your career this is an ideal project to apply to.

The Heritage Corner team sees Unseen Histories as a vehicle for bringing together Black artists in the city who share a passion for ‘re-humanising history by asserting your humanity and the humanity of your ancestors’.

The application deadline is: Midday, Monday 9th August 2021.
