Guest blog from the Thought Bubble team who are getting giddier by the day in anticiaption of their sixth festival.
"2012’s Thought Bubble festival is getting ever closer, and as part of our sixth (and biggest ever) programme of events, we have two exclusive firsts for the UK! We’ve been working hard with some of the UK’s loveliest (and most talented) comic creators and illustrators to bring the UK’s first ever exhibition of Mondo Artwork to Leeds, as well as the inaugural awards presentation ceremony for the newly founded British Comic Awards.
As part of this year’s Thought Bubble we’ve been working closely with designer extraordinaire Olly Moss, to bring the first ever exhibition of Mondo artwork to the UK. We’re huge fans of Olly’s work here at the festival, and we think that Mondo are producing some of the best one-sheet designs around, giving some amazing artists a brilliant platform to re-imagine classic and cult poster designs. The exhibition takes place at the lovely White Cloth Gallery from the 17th November – 2nd December, with a launch event on the evening of Friday 16th November. For full details please visit our website.
We’re also delighted to be hosting the first ever British Comics Awards ceremony at this year’s Thought Bubble. Founded by Adam Cadwell in 2011, the awards are something that’s really close to our hearts, as they seek to recognise and promote British comic creating talent, and reward some of the exceptional work that’s coming out of the community at the moment. The comics nominated for the shortlists must be the product of a British creative team, and have been published in Britain over the last twelve months. The awards committee (including Thought Bubble Director Lisa Wood, and Assistant Director Clark Burscough) had an extremely hard time selecting the books to be put forward to the judges, and you can see the choices they made up on the British Comic Awards website. The awards ceremony takes place on Saturday 17th November in the Royal Armouries’ Bury Theatre, and everyone attending Thought Bubble’s convention is invited to attend, and help us celebrate the best of British comic creation.
We’re really pleased to be able to bring these two events to Leeds, we hope they’ll allow people to discover some really amazing artwork and storytellers, while also celebrating a medium that we here at Thought Bubble love. It’s been a brilliant year for British comics, and it’s a great time to discover comics in general, with amazing new boundary pushing forms of the medium popping up every day, so why not come along and see them for yourself?"
