Thought Bubble Family Workshops

Thought Bubble Family Workshops
Written by Thought Bubble Comic Art Festival  13/11/2012

This year Leeds Inspired funded part of Thought Bubble Festival's family programme of workshops and events. The Thought Bubble team blogged about what's in store for young comic fans in Leeds this month.

"For the 2012 Thought Bubble festival, we’ve really pushed the boat out in terms of family and child-friendly events. Everyone on the festival team remembers the sheer joy brought by reading comics when we were little, and that’s something we want to spread and pass down to future generations of potential comic fans. We’ve picked out the best of the bunch so you can take advantage of the great events taking place around Leeds as part of this year’s Thought Bubble!

Every year we run the Northern Sequential Art Competition, an initiative designed to get the creative juices of Britain’s comickers flowing! This year we’re also having an exhibition of entries, so you can come along and get some inspiration for next year’s competition; there’s categories for 12-18 year olds, and adults, so we want to see everyone pushing those pencils! The exhibition runs from 1st – 30th November at Leeds Library exhibition space, so there’s plenty of time to come along and have a look.
If you like monsters as much as we do (and we LOVE monsters), and have always wanted a monster of your own as much as we do (we’d REALLY like some monsters of our own), then we’d recommend coming down to our Zombie knitting and Cthulhu crocheting workshops. These free events are run by Thought Bubble member Sarah from Wessenden Woollies, with all materials provided, and are aimed at young people and families, with colouring sessions also running to keep younger children occupied. The workshops take place on 13th and 14th November at Leeds Library from 5pm – 7pm, and full details can be found on our website.

The reason we here at Thought Bubble do what we do is because we just plain adore comics, so each year we try to give as many away as possible for free, to spread that love around! This year our book crossing comic give-away is going to include even more libraries from around Yorkshire than ever before, and we’d love it if you’d come along and take home a free book or two. There’ll be some great all ages titles waiting for you at Baildon, Bingley, Bradford, Eccleshill, Ilkley, Keighley, Laisterdyke, Shipley, Leeds Central, Manningham, Wibsey, Wyke, Menston, & Burley library from 10am on Friday 16th November, and for more details, please take a look at our full festival programme.

Thought Bubble’s annual convention at Clarence Dock on the 17th & 18th November is the biggest and friendliest celebration of comics in the UK, and a great opportunity to come along and see some of the best creators working in the industry today, hear some fascinating panels and presentations on crafting comics, and also hang out with some amazing costumed characters as our convention attracts cosplayers from all around!

The convention has free entry for under-12s (accompanied by a ticket holding parent/guardian), and we’re running a number of all-ages activities for the entire weekend, including:

The amazing Art Heroes running a free drop-in super hero creation workshop and competition to win some brilliant goodies

The heroic Hexjibber bringing along his GIANT colouring-in activities, and needing your help to create an exhibition live in the hall

The phantastic Phoenix comic taking over Thought Bubble with a Feather Prize hunt, a Zoo of Awesomeness that we need you to create the animals for, and a massive battle between the comic’s artists to create the best crazy creatures.

The demented Dr Simpo’s crazy dressing up and character creation workshops, which need you to help the mad doctor bring to life some new crazy alter egos.

The sublime story cubes workshops with Bongo Comics’ Ian Boothby, using image dice to create stories that are out of this world!

A full list of convention events, and venue details can be found on the convention programme. We hope to see you there at some of them, so we can show you just how much we love comics, and why we think you should love them too!"

Thought Bubble Festival 2012 runs from 11th - 18th November.
