Leeds Indie Food chow down in Chapel A

Leeds Indie Food chow down in Chapel A
Written by Chris Ball House Of Koko  21/04/2016
Chris Ball, owner of House of Koko, gives you a run-down of the Leeds Indie Food Festival events happening in Chapel Allerton.
School Diner @ Chapel Allerton Primary School
Friday 13th May 15.30 to 21.00 & Saturday 14th May 12.00 to 21.00
After the success of last year’s School Diner, Mark from Sela Bar is organising this popular family friendly bash in Chapel Allerton Primary’s playground again. There’ll be plenty of fun to be had for the kids with a host of games, art, music and family activities. There’s lots to keep your tastebuds happy too with award winning street food from Manjit’s Kitchen, ice-cream from Leeds very own Northern Bloc, pizzas courtesy of The Pizza Camper, a tipple or two from Sela Bar and coffee and cake from neighbours House of Koko.
Painting and Printing with Food @ House of Koko
Tuesday 17th & 24th May - 19.00 to 21.00
Lo and Vee have been running art classes in Chapel Allerton for while now, teaching people that you don’t need to be able to draw to be creative. But in the spirit of Leeds Indie Food, with a decidedly culinary take, these two art classes will involve painting food with food. A unique opportunity to flex your creative muscles, get messy and play with your food. So ditch the paintbrush and pick up a carrot and create your masterpiece.
Wild Food Pop-up @ House of Koko
Wednesday 18th May 19.00 to 22.00
Resident chef Josh Whitehead and forager Craig Worrall are joining forces for one night only to deliver a pop-up night so exciting that even we don’t know what will happen. Craig and Josh will be scouring Leeds finest and many foraging spots and then they’ll design and prepping a taster menu around the ingredients that they have literally found. Craig’s reputation as the man with his nose to the ground for the hottest foraging spots combined with Josh’s fast growing name as THE hottest young chef to watch in Leeds our mouths are watering at the prospect of this collaboration.
Cheese Tasting: David vs Goliath @ George and Joseph
Wednesday 18th May & Thursday 19th May 19.00 to 21.00
I can’t think of anything sexier than being blind-folded and fed cheese. Or is that just me? 6 rounds. 12 cheeses. George and Joseph’s Stephen will be Christian Grey for the evening in this intimate battle of David vs Goliath in the world of cheese. Stephen is pitching the best of hand-crafted indie cheese producers against the mass-produced titans of cheese making. Blue versus blue. Cheddar versus cheddar. The gloves are on, the knives sharpened who will be the victor? Space is very limited so book early to avoid missing out on this epic fight. Cue ‘Eye of the Tiger’. It’s on!
Koko’s Afternoon Tea Party @ House of Koko
Sunday 22nd May 14.00 to 16.00
Forget everything you already know about afternoon tea. We’ve never been keen on rules in House of Koko and we think that traditional afternoon tea is well overdue an overhaul. If you ask most modern chefs to prepare afternoon tea they’ll run a mile. Savoury small bites including ‘Salmon, cream cheese & horseradish on sourdough’ and a nod to the Bukowski novel ‘Ham & mustard on rye’. Petit fours such as a ‘Kouign amann’ or ‘Punschkrapfen’ and you can start to see what we mean by ripping up the rule book. We didn’t even bother looking at it. Loose leaf teas and a few extra surprises this will be an afternoon tea party that’s going to burn all the doilies and bring this tradition kicking and screaming into 2016. Nans are allowed though.
House of North/Further Koko @ House of Koko and Further North
Friday 27th May - Monday 30th May 10.00 to 22.00
I'm not really sure how it started but I seem to think North Bar’s John was first to suggest that Further North and House of Koko should work together for Leeds Indie Food Festival. 'House of North' I hollered as he was walking away. 'Further Koko' he retorted. So, House of Koko is becoming ‘House of North’ and Further North is becoming ‘Further Koko’ for the bank holiday weekend to see out the last few days of the festival. House of North will be serving North Brewing Co beer through the day and turning into a pop-up pub by night. Or get North Star coffee at the other end of Chapel Allerton in Further Koko. You'll find North Brewing Co flavoured snacks, desserts and ice-creams. Different food and different beers at each venue. Fancy a beer brownie with your G&T? Certainly Sir!
Make sure you join us. We don’t want to be the only ones having all the fun.
