Jung Chang Book Prize

Jung Chang Book Prize
Written by The Business Confucius Institute at the University of Leeds  27/11/2014
Seeing how never win anything, ever, we were very giddy to find out we'd been randomly selected from a twitter prize draw to receive a signed copy of Jung Chang's book ‘Empress Dowager Cixi’. The prize came from Business Confucius Institute at the University of Leeds through their series of Meet The Author events.  We like to share our good fortune here at Leeds Inspired so the signed book now resides in Central Library for everyone to enjoy. Ellen Wang, Operations Manager from the Confucius Institute tells us more.
"Last week saw the arrival of bestselling author Jung Chang in Leeds to give a talk about her latest book, ‘Empress Dowager Cixi’. Jung Chang is a very well-known author and we didn’t want anyone to miss out on the opportunity to see her in person, this prize draw was a way to reward those who helped to spread the word on Twitter. The book was won by Leeds Inspired in a competition and we are delighted that this prize will now benefit the wider public as the signed copy has been donated to Leeds Libraries.
The event itself proved to be an extremely popular episode of the Meet The Authors series organised by the Confucius Institute. Speaking to a large crowd in the Conference Auditorium at the University of Leeds, Ms Chang delighted attendees with stories unearthed from historical archives and painstaking research. The formidable Empress Dowager Cixi had a fascinating life.
Photographs of the Empress, along with Jung Chang’s incisive commentary, served to bring her to life for an audience of all ages and backgrounds. The book signing session also proved to be a hit, with many attendees purchasing copies of Jung Chang’s books and waiting for their moment with the author. For some, this was an exciting opportunity to meet a woman whose work they had enjoyed for many years- her first bestseller, ‘Wild Swans’, came out in 1991.
The book will now be put on display, before becoming part of the reference collection at Leeds Central Library and non-signed copies are also available to borrow.
