Meet Johanna Härmä, the second of our four Leeds Inspired poster artists.
'I'm looking at this Leeds Inspired poster commission from the perspective of someone who packed up and moved here from Finland just after turning 19. In the past 5 years I've gone from seeing the student world of Leeds while studying graphic design at Leeds University to working full time and living in various different areas around Leeds. By now it's become my second home, but I'm still working on my Yorkshire accent.
Scandinavian and especially Finnish design has definitely influenced my style but studying design in Leeds strengthened my interest in illustration and had a huge impact on my work. My personal projects often have an element of fantasy and fun and are a lot of the time at least partially abstract. I tend to use bold and bright colours and have recently began designing illustrated patterns and experimenting with shapes.
I feel like the more experience I gain as a graphic designer, the better my illustrations get. These skills compliment each other especially because I work on most of my illustrations digitally. Most of my best ideas come on the bus, or wherever I've got time to just sit down with a Pilot pen and a sketchbook, which is why I rarely go anywhere without them.
It's always great to hear people interpret my work as a lot of it can be looked at in different ways and in the abstract work people see very different things.'
