The Craft Centre & Design Gallery takes the helm of the @Unfold_Leeds twitter account for #TuesdayTakeover this week:
Back in 1982 something exciting emerged in the city of Leeds, a hidden gem in the heart of the cultural quarter that is still going strong today. With the city of Leeds going through so many fantastic developments recently it’s an exciting time for us as we see more and more engaging events and projects highlighting the visual arts right on our doorstep. We have been inspiring visitors for the past 33 years and we’re very proud to be a part of the Yorkshire cultural and visual art scene.
Working with makers and supporting their development and creativity has enabled us to provide a unique visitor experience for a growing audience of those wishing to learn more about the skill, talent and originality behind contemporary craft. Handmade jewellery, ceramics, limited edition prints, glass, wood, textiles and works in mixed media are displayed within an exciting seasonal exhibition programme where we explore different themes. A lot of our makers are from Yorkshire too and these can be recognised in the gallery wherever there is a Yorkshire Rose symbol next to their display.
Last month we had a great display of hares in our exhibition Hare We Go which was great to see visitor’s reactions; children and adults alike gasped when they saw characterful hares hopping, skipping and jumping in the gallery and I’m sure our new exhibition of figures (Figure That Exhibition) will be getting some ooohhs and aaahhs too! We’re also really excited about our forthcoming programme of events planned alongside The British Art Show being hosed above us in Leeds City Art Gallery including the very best of British jewellery, introducing some new graduates with their innovative and inspiring ceramics and glass and working with some renowned ceramicists and printmakers too! Certainly a place to visit regularly from September as there’s lots to inspire you with. We’re also excited about two touring jewellery shows (Intrinsic and Manifest) which we’re hosting this year. It has been great to become more and more involved with a wider community to bring more and more exciting shows to our audience.
We hope that as we explore and share more about these craftspeople and provide this exciting and fantastic insight into their world means that people start to appreciate the world of contemporary craft. Stories are told, passed on in the gallery and then again by the visitor when they share news of their exciting discovery with a friend.
We don’t just like to shout about what we’re up to though! We love to share what’s going on in the wider community and feel this is vital if we are to grow as a creative city. In particular we’re really excited about this year’s Light Night which will coincide with the opening of The British Art Show and also we look forward to following The Tetley’s exhibition programme - even though they’re going up against us as a Welcome to Yorkshire Art & Culture Finalist with us this year!
The support of our designers, visitors and customers over these remarkable years has been crucial in the success of the Craft Centre and Design Gallery and we’d like to thank them very much. We hope you enjoy what the future has in store as we continue to bring you the very best in contemporary craft and share what’s going on in the wider community.
