Tracy Whitney from Northern School of Contemporary Dance tells us about their open day on 14th July - and throws in a few 1980's references for good measure!
"2012 has been a year full of celebrations; from the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, to the Olympics and Big Dance. Here at Northern School of Contemporary Dance we are keeping up with the community spirit that these celebrations have highlighted by hosting our first Community Open Day. We are incredibly excited about throwing open the doors to showcase our wonderful facilities, giving people the opportunity to get involved in a free dance class or two, watch performances in our very own Riley Theatre and enjoy a range of food stalls, face painting, craft, music and arts. There’s fun to be had for all the family.
So what is Northern School of Contemporary Dance? Apart from being 'that building with the dancers on the outside’, at the bottom of Chapeltown Road, we are actually a dance conservatoire and train some of the world’s most elite dancers. We award degree qualifications for our training, have our own postgraduate dance company 'Verve', present performances at The Riley Theatre and also house an education team who run children's, youth and adult classes during term time.
We are not quite the image of 'Fame' that may spring to mind, and besides I think we may get arrested for dancing on the top of cars (and I am also showing my age), but we definitely have some cool moves going off in the studios. NSCD is always on the lookout for local talent and is interested in finding new ways of working with local partners. The Community Open Day is our opportunity to escape from our little dance bubble, so, in the words of Swing Out Sister, it is time to 'Breakout' (showing my age again).
To help our first Community Open Day be a success we would love lots of people to come along and share in our dance celebration. Whether you are two or 52 we have a range of classes on offer, or if you prefer to watch dance we have that too. But if dance is not your thing, please still pop in and sample some culinary delights or support local artists who will have outdoor stalls. You can find out full details of the day over on our website."
