West Yorkshire Queer Stories: Jamie Fletcher

West Yorkshire Queer Stories: Jamie Fletcher
Written by West Yorkshire Queer Stories  21/07/2020

When West Yorkshire Queer Stories sat down with theatre director Jamie Fletcher in September 2019, it was a chance to find out about one of the most groundbreaking productions ever staged at the Leeds Playhouse. 2017’s Dancing Bear exploded what Jamie refers to as “the holy trinity of headf*cks” - gender, sexuality and faith - with a boundary-blurring mixture of music, dance and philosophical drama, featuring Divina De Campo amongst a diverse and talented cast. In this extract, we hear about the origins of the show and the importance of encouraging “honest real stories, told by queer people, to be...

West Yorkshire Queer Stories: Ian Baxter
Written by West Yorkshire Queer Stories  13/07/2020

Ian Baxter was one of the first people interviewed for West Yorkshire Queer Stories, back when the project was in its pilot phase in 2015. He remained a close collaborator throughout, performing the one-man play The Purple List in support of the project and starring in the short film Riding West on a Walrus Tail. In this extract from his original interview, he looks back to the late 1990s, when he and a group of friends established a collective called Victor Victoria, who went on to stage extravagant queer dance events at Leeds Town Hall and found themselves in the...

Written by West Yorkshire Queer Stories  08/07/2020

West Yorkshire Queer Stories interviewed 22-year-old Axelle Nasah in March 2019, touching on their experiences being black and non-binary in Leeds, life as a student, and becoming an activist with Stonewall. Attending meetings of their university’s predominantly white LGBT+ society, Axelle found that “my experience when I’m trying to discuss homophobia with white gay people is that my race tends to be ignored, so they believe that there is only one way to experience homophobia.” In this extract, they talk about the empowerment they felt at an event at Live Art Bistro in 2018 where, for once, they were not in the...

West Yorkshire Queer Stories
Written by Ross Horsley  03/06/2020

Within local histories there’s always been a void where the perspectives and experiences of LGBT+ people should be. Over the last two years, a project based in Leeds has been working with local people to fill that void with voices - to get stories straight from the mouths of those who lived them, and those stories into the archives and museums that can preserve and share them.West Yorkshire Queer Stories came to an end in May, leaving as its main legacy a website crammed with the memories of over 200 participants, now available to listen to at www.wyqs.co.uk. From detailed...
