Leanne Buchan tells us why we all need to get on our bikes and back le bid.
"Leeds is full of avid cyclists from ride to work groups and recreational clubs to the hardcore groups of committed two wheelers who can be found bouncing around the rocks at the top of some of our most picturesque landscapes. Bit do our cyclists know that Yorkshire has the opportunity to host the Grand Départ leg of the Tour de France in 2016?
We kid you not, Leeds could be awash with lycra as thousands of cycling enthusiasts and their entourages could descend on the city to explore our beautiful rural cycling routes and kick off the race for the ultimate cycling title. With support from big names including Mark Cavendish, 15 time stage winner of the Tour de France also-known-as ‘The Fastest Man on Two Wheels, the bid is hotting up but it’s not all about celebrity support. We take our inspiration from the good people of this fine city. So we’re appealing to every cyclist who has trudged through snow, sleet, hail and rain to make it in to the office for 9am; every parent who’s ever set off on a family bike ride and ended up giving their child a backie up the hill; every single person who can remember the day their stabilisers came off and they felt all grown up; and every cyclist geek who’s ever spent a little too long concocting their dream two-wheel creation on the kitchen table to the dismay of their other half.
The Tour de France is about more than bringing the world’s elite cyclists to the region, it’s about remembering what we have here and making sure that everyone can enjoy in the spectacle. From finding new cycling routes and clubs to be part of, to turning out in force to wave off those with more stamina than most, the Tour de France represents a celebration of cycling and the great outdoors.
But we’re not there yet. We need to show the operators of the race what Yorkshire has to offer and demonstrate our pride in our pastimes. So here at Leeds Inspired we’re pumping up our tyres donning a yellow jersey and firing up our computer! That’s right, you don’t have to do a mammoth cycle route around the city perimeters to show your support. Put the kettle on and take two minutes to sign the petition and Back le Bid. It’s a simple form and you won’t receive loads of spam afterwards, just that warm fuzzy feeling you get from community spirit."
