Silent Film All-Dayer
20 May 2018 2pm - 7pm
part of the Yorkshire Silent Film Festival.
We’re thrilled to welcome back the Yorkshire Silent Film Festival for an all-day programme of excellent silent films, all with fantastic live musical accompaniments.
The day will begin with everyone’s favourites Laurel and Hardy, in a triple-bill of wonderful shorts, with live performances from Donald Sosin (piano) and Trevor Bartlett (percussion).
Tod Browning’s grisly, twisted melodrama The Unknown then follows - featuring Lon Chaney as a knife-throwing serial killer, on the run from the law – with live music accompaniment from Jonny Best (piano) and Trevor Bartlett (percussion).
We then have a wonderful French double-bill, Ménilmontant and La Souriante Madame Beudet. Dmitri Kirsanoff’s Ménilmontant remains one of the most celebrated impressionist films of the 1920s. Screening on 35mm, the film will be accompanied by a specially-created sound score blending live foley from Sue Harding and Rebecca Glover, as well as with piano from Jonny Best. And screening on 16mm, Germaine Dulac’s La Souriante Madame Beudet is one of the first explicitly feminist films, with Dulac using a series of radical and imaginative techniques to express her protagonist’s interior life – with live cello Liz Hanks.
And we finish the day with the visually stunning and daring 1921 Hamlet, featuring a commanding and vividly expressive performance from Finish star Asta Nielsen, with live music from Donald Sosin (piano) and an introduction by Judith Buchanan (University of York).
Please check times with event organiser for any last minute changes.
Level access is available to the stalls via the Brudenell Road fire exit. There are four wheelchair spaces in the auditorium. Sadly at this time our toilets are not accessible via wheelchair.
