The Tetley

Hunslet Road, Leeds, LS10 1JQ

A new, one-day-only performance piece by international Romany artist Delaine Le Bas.

The work explores the layers of significance that surround the Gypsy stopping-place or temporary encampment, and its meaning in the urban landscape.

Delaine, who is herself from an English Romany background, has been working with local Gypsy and Traveller people to make the piece. She has also taken inspiration from archive collections held by Leeds-based Gypsy and Traveller organisation Leeds GATE, and the Romany Collection at Leeds University’s Brotherton Library. The piece, "On The Reservation", takes the form of a tent, which will be erected outside The Tetley’s main entrance for the day, and which will house an installation of artworks, and a live performance which will be repeated throughout the day.

The piece is part of a larger art project by Leeds GATE, Feet On The Ground, in which artists Vanessa Cardui, Rudi Holmes and Grace O’Neill are working with Gypsy and Traveller people to explore memories of stopping in Leeds.
