Nonclassical Club Night returns to the Belgrave Music Hall featuring leading vocal ensemble, Juice, notable cellist Cecilia Bignall, Sylvia Hinz and Northern Contemporary Collective - who feature some of the finest young professional musicians in Yorkshire.

Juice

Citing everything from The Boswell Sisters, Bjork and Meredith Monk as influences, their purely vocal music takes all manner of unpredictable directions, drawing on classical, world music, jazz, folk, pop, improvisation and theatre.

They have featured on BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM and have performed at London’s Wigmore Hall, the South Bank, King’s Place and the Roundhouse as well as outside the UK, including concerts in Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Finland, New York and at SXSW Festival Austin, Texas.

Their debut album Songspin (2011) won an International Music Award and was reviewed as ‘Eighteen immaculately achieved tracks, spanning Elisabeth Lutyens to Gabriel Prokofiev via folk song and avant garde, enchant and enthrall’ (The Observer), and of their follow-up, Laid Bare: Love Songs (2014) BBC Music Magazine said, ‘these three are feisty, and will take on anything the variety and virtuosity are astonishing, and rewarding’. Their third album Sliding the Same Way (2014) was proclaimed ‘fascinating and unconventional’ (The Scottish Herald) and their fourth album Snow Queens is to be released Autumn 2018.

Juice are Anna Snow, Sarah Dacey and Kerry Andrew.

Cecilia Bignall

Cellist and composer Cecilia Bignall is passionate about chamber music and contemporary music. She is notably cellist of Trio Derazey (formerly known as the Jorgensen Trio), who won both the prestigious St Martin’s Chamber Music Competition and the Malta International Music Competition, and is a member of exciting accordion-and-cello ensemble Duo Bayanello. She also plays with Ralph Wyld’s jazz sextet Mosaic.

Sylvia Hinz

Sylvia Hinz is praised for her equally fierce and bold dramatic performance style, Sylvia Hinz is one of the leading recorder players worldwide, specialised in contemporary music and improvisation. She studied recorder at the University of Arts Berlin with Gerd Luenenbuerger, experimental music with Dieter Schnebel, chamber music with Nigel North and conducting / ensemble leading at the BAK Trossingen with René Schuh and Wolfgang Ruediger.

Hinz plays solo recitals and concerts with ensembles and orchestras, and has a special interest in contemporary music and improvisation, and in unusual instrumental combinations and collaboration with other arts (e.g. painting, literature, sculpture).

Northern Contemporary Collective

The Northern Contemporary Collective was set up in 2017 by some the finest young professional musicians in Yorkshire. The collective is a diverse and versatile ensemble focusing on performing contemporary music from established composers, while providing opportunities for new composers to gain valuable performances of their work.

NCC are currently involved in a number of artistic collaborations which span numerous artforms and approaches.
