Learn and explore the basics of linocut on this one day workshop.
Linocut is a relief printing process. The printing plate can be made from traditional hessian backed flooring lino or a polymer based block. We will use an easy cut lino which is softer and easier to use. You will be shown how to safely cut and chisel an image or pattern into the lino using specialist cutting tools. You will be shown how to ink up and print the lino using our traditional Albion press and also some simple but effective methods that can be continued at home without a press.
What experience do I need?
The course is suitable for absolute beginners. Lino printing is a simple way for you to be introduced to printmaking. You’ll learn about inks, paper, rollers and various printing techniques using presses and hand burnishing techniques. If you have an established artistic practice you can develop prints in new ways. Don’t have any expectations and you may be surprised at the results you achieve!
What will I make?
You will make an edition of A4 prints onto various papers, using an A5 lino plate and a variety of ink colours.

Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible. By their nature, some printmaking processes involve an amount of physical effort. Leeds Print Workshop is based in a basement studio at Patrick Studios, a bespoke venue for artists operated by East Street Arts. It is wheelchair accessible, with a lift, larger than standard doors and accessible toilet facilities. We recognise that everybody’s accessibility needs may differ, therefore please email us at hello@leedsprintworkshop.org to discuss any concerns you may have before booking. There is one blue badge car parking space to the side of the building on Rider Street, subject to availability.
Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
