Leeds Lights Switch On 2013
7 Nov 2013 6:30pm
The countdown to Christmas officially starts with the annual Leeds Lights Switch-On on Victoria Gardens.
Up-and-coming British band The Vamps are set to entertain the crowds at the Leeds Lights Switch on, with special guest of honour, home-grown Olympic boxing sensation Nicola Adams who will be on hand to start the official countdown to light up the city.
The Vamps, who launched themselves into the public spotlight via posting their music videos on YouTube, have shot to stardom through the social media platform and have recently just completed a tour with McFly. The four piece - singer Bradley Will Simpson, guitarist James McVey, drummer Tristan Evans and bassist Connor Ball are excited to be performing a couple of their most popular tracks including Wild Heart and Can we Dance.
Nicola is Great Britain's most decorated female boxer. She qualified for the London 2012 Olympic Games by winning her third World Championship Silver Medal. She faced the same opponent, China's Ren Cancan, in the Olympic Final, and this time won the first ever Olympic Women's Boxing Gold Medal. Nicola works hard as a role model in the city and one of her main aims is to help increase participation in sport. One of the ways she is doing this is backing the council's 'Let's Get Active' programme to encourage people who do not do any physical activity to do at least 30 minutes of physical activity, once a week.
Former X Factor finalists Same Difference were the first stars to be announced as part of the stellar line up on stage on 7 November.
In what will be their second appearance at the event, Same Difference, which is made up of brother and sister singing duo Sean and Sarah Smith, will perform at the annual free event, which this year is celebrating its 30th birthday. This occasion will mark the beginning of an exciting few months in the city for Same Difference, who will also be starring in the Leeds Carriageworks Christmas pantomime production of 'Sleeping Beauty' from December.
Organised by Leeds City Council and Real Radio, with support from partners the Yorkshire Evening Post, other guests confirmed to appear include up and coming boy band Rubylux, who will be joined by Australian singer Gabriella Cilmi, who had her first big hit with 'Sweet about Me'.
Also featuring will be young guitar vocalist Kirsty White - the winner of Leeds City Council's annual Breeze Has Talent competition and of course the ever popular Santa's Show time along with special guests.
Further details on other performers and local sporting celebrities who are set to appear at the switch-on will be revealed in the run up to the night.
The Leeds Light switch-on forms part of the council's wider festive programme 'Winter WonderLeeds' which will provide a number of events and activities across the city centre including the 12th annual Christkindelmarkt on Millennium Square.
The entertainment, hosted by event partners Real Radio, will start from around 6.45pm at Victoria Gardens on the Headrow with stage based fun for all the family featuring a vibrant mix of:
Live music performers
Special guest celebrities
Local sporting heroes
Plus a small selection of fun fair rides along Cookridge Street
The evening's entertainment culminates with the big switch-on of one of the UK's largest city centre festive illumination displays and a spectacular firework display illuminating the skies all across the city.
Further details will be updated here shortly but for exclusive performer announcements and all the latest news make sure you listen to the Real Radio Breakfast show or pick up a copy of the Yorkshire Evening Post.
